Ashburton(S) has seen an increase of apprenticeships and traineeships commenced and completed between 2001 and 2008. The most noticeable increase being in traineeships commenced between 2001 and 2004, and again between 2006 and 2008.

 

The number of apprenticeships and traineeships completed is directly related to the number commenced, with traineeships normally lasting 12 months and apprenticeships normally three or four years, depending on the type. Therefore the number of completed apprenticeships in 2008 is linked to the number of commenced apprenticeships in 2005.

 

The number of commenced traineeships spiked in 2004 and 2008, however the number completed in 2005 indicated only 50% completed the training. Traineeships which commenced between 2001 & 2007 and completed between 2002 & 2008 equate to a 64% completion rate, where 36% of trainees failed to complete their traineeships or withdrew during the year. This completion rate is equally distributed across all industries.

  

 

The main fields of apprenticeship study in Ashburton(S) were electrical and metals, manufacturing and services. The metals, manufacturing and services apprenticeships display a three year lag between commencement and completion, with only a small proportion failing to complete the course of study.

 

 

Finance, property and business services, and mining industry traineeships were the most popular traineeships commenced in Ashburton(S), with a relatively short completion period, most finishing by the following year.  The completions for both listed traineeships were noticeably lower in 2006, significantly lower than the commencements the year before.
