Goldfields Esperance

The Region

The Goldfields-Esperance region is a vast land area of 771 296 km², which makes the region just under a third of Western Australia’s total land mass and hosting a relatively constant and widely dispersed regional residential population of 58 727. The region extends from the south-east corner of the state to the Little Sandy Desert and Gibson Deserts, the Mid West, Great Southern and Wheatbelt regions to the west and the South Australian and Northern Territory borders to the east.

As diverse as it is vast, the Goldfields-Esperance Region extends from the southern coast to the rugged  landscape of the northern Goldfields. Undulating plains and low rugged ranges typify the north-eastern Goldfields. Further east, the country is largely desert, although the vegetation displays considerable diversity. The Eastern Goldfields area (centred on Kalgoorlie-Boulder) is predominantly flat, with many salt lakes, some hills, and low ranges. Eucalypt trees cover one of the largest, intact,  temperate woodlands in the Southern Hemisphere, from the State barrier fence west of Norseman to east of Balladonia. Wild coastal scenery, rugged granite peaks, estuaries and sweeping heartlands characterise the south-east coast. The coastal strip boasts four national Parks.

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Shires of Coolgardie, Dundas, Esperance, Laverton, Leonora, Menzies, Ngaanyatjarraku and Ravensthorpe are located within the Region.

Overview

The Department of Regional Development and Lands estimates the Goldfields-Esperance region’s gross regional product to be valued at around $7.2 billion for the year 2008-09, representing 4.2 per cent of the state total. The region boasts a substantial economy, based predominantly on the extraction and processing of mineral resources (in particular gold and nickel), which are currently valued at around $6.3 billion in 2008-09. The mining sector is complemented by related manufacturing and service sectors.

In addition, well established agriculture industries, such as cereal crops, wool and livestock-for-meat production, generate around $500 million per year. Tourism, focused on coastal Esperance and the outback Goldfields, yields in excess of $200 million per annum. The Goldfields-Esperance region offers investors a range of opportunities and future potential.

The Goldfields-Esperance region offers excellent infrastructure with east-west transport connections, a regional port, natural gas and a competitive energy supply. These services, coupled with well equipped education and training amenities, quality hospital care and recreation facilities, make the region an excellent location for both residential and industrial development.

The region is well served in terms of communications. Mobile and internet services are widely available throughout the area. There are plans to extend mobile phone coverage along the Nullarbor Plain into South Australia. Fibre optic cables, passing through Kalgoorlie-Boulder, present an opportunity to develop the city into a major communications hub. New developments include a common user inter-modal freight facility to be located in the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Once established, this facility will be able to direct freight north and south while reducing the freight transport pressure on the Perth metro area.
