From 1996 to 2006, youth unemployment fell steadily from 12.7% to 9.7%. The youth labour force participation rate fluctuated over the ten year period, with a low of 47.6% in 1996 and a high of 53.2% in 2001.

The participation rate fell by over 10% between 2001 and 2006. The number of unemployed people remained fairly constant over this period, with the change in unemployment rate driven by the large increase in the number of employed people moving into the area. The unemployment rate remained consistently low in this region for the ten year period to 2006, falling from 3.5% to a low of 2.4%.
