Number of hours worked

Trends in the working patterns in the Pilbara between 1996 and 2006, signified by hours worked, are suggestive of the predominant Mining and Construction industry workforce present within the region and the associated longer working hours.

Proportionally, there was minimal movement in the hours worked in the categories which encompass the 0 – 34 hr hours worked in the Pilbara. Categories from the 35 – 48 hrs experienced a downward trend across the 1996, 2001 and 2006 Census periods, whilst the 49 hrs category increased across all three periods.

The number of people working more than 40 hours

The Pilbara’s non-core hours in the 49 hr category incrementally increased in the 1996, 2001 & 2006 Census periods and proportionally was the largest category in number of hours worked across all periods.
