Flow of heavy traffic and freight tonnage through the port

Iron ore was consistently the largest export for the six year period to 2007/08 from both the Port Hedland and Dampier ports.

In 2006/07 there were 126,125,225 tonnes of freight that went through the Dampier port.  Of this, 103,890,562 tonnes or 82.7% were iron ore exports. LNG was the second largest contributor with 12,508,917 tonnes (9.96% of total exports). During this period 99.6% of all freight tonnage was exported with only 498,414 tonnes (0.4%) being imported. Of the imports, petroleum contributed 55%.

In 2006/07, 99.3% of all freight tonnage were exported through the Port at Hedland with only 812,439 (0.7%) tonnes being imported. Fuel oils contributed to 65% of total imports. During this period 76,708,570 tonnes or 94.2% of total exports of iron ore were exported through Port Hedland. The second largest contributor to exports was salt with 2,278,567 tonnes (2.8% of total exports).

During 2006 and 2007 there were 6 cyclones which impacted on the total tonnage for the Dampier Port Authority. In 2007 additional infrastructure was completed allowing greater quantities of iron ore to be exported, contributing to the spike in exports for the year.

The main contributor to the rise in tonnage for Port Hedland in 2006/07 was the accelerated demand for iron ore. Infrastructure upgrades, such as the construction of an additional berth helped facilitate this increase.
