Population Composition by Age and Sex
Across Roebourne(S), the proportion of males between the ages of 25 and 54 and females between 25 and 39 were markedly higher than the state proportion. This may be due to the resources activity in the region attracting a larger number of working age persons, with the proportion employed in the mining and construction industries rising noticeably from around 28% of the working population in 2001 to 37% in 2006.
Roebourne(S), like Port Hedland(T) shows a comparable proportion of school age children to that of the state proportion. In the other Local Government Areas (LGAs) across the Pilbara, the proportions of 10 to 19 year olds are significantly lower than those for the State.

Population Composition by Sex
All Pilbara LGAs showed higher populations of males than females in all years. In general, the male to female ratio in Roebourne(S) has been gradually rising between 1996 and 2006. In 2006 the comparative ratio of males to females was 130:100, increasing from 115:100 in 1996. This further highlights the increase in employment levels in the mining and construction industries between 2001 and 2006.
Population Composition by Age
In Roebourne, as with all areas in the Pilbara, 30 – 44 year olds were the highest population group for each year. The 30 – 44 and 45 – 64 age groups showed the greatest increases from 2001 through to 2006. The 65+ age group remained relatively static throughout, showing small increases from 1996 to 2006.
The most noticeable change over the last ten years has been the changing composition of the 45 to 64 aged cohort of the population, which has been growing at a faster rate than any other.
